Extension Spring Replacement
Open the door by hand and it drifts back down on its own, a little at first and then all at once. Nothing is broken that you can see, but the springs along the tracks look tired, rusty and slightly sagging.
Extension Spring Replacement
In plain words
Choosing the right spring is a matter of weight, not colour. Extension springs are rated for the weight they are meant to lift, and the correct pair for your door is found by weighing the door itself with the opener released, then checking that figure against the wire size, coil diameter and length of the old springs. Paint colour on the end coil is only a hint; older springs fade, get overpainted or were never quite right to begin with. A pair matched to the measured weight gives a door that holds at half height and lifts with one hand, and an opener that works lightly.
How the visit goesIt is the first hard frost of the year and the door on the old detached garage has stopped halfway, squealing at one pulley. The springs are the ones that came with the door decades ago, orange with rust where they hang near the back wall.

How the visit goes
Weighing the door
Extension springs are chosen by the weight they are built to lift, so the door is weighed rather than guessed at. With the opener released and the springs disconnected or slack, the technician lowers the door onto a scale set on the floor under the bottom section and reads the figure. That number, together with the door's height, sets the spring rating and stretch length. The old springs are measured as a cross-check, but the scale wins if the two disagree, because a door can gain weight from new panels, insulation or a cladding added since the springs went on.
Bringing the opener back into step
The opener is the last thing touched. Once the door balances by hand, the trolley is reconnected and the door run through several full cycles under power while the technician watches the cables ride their pulleys and the springs stretch evenly. Because the door is now lighter to move than it was on tired springs, the opener's force and travel settings are reset to suit; a force setting left high would push a balanced door too hard. Then the reversal checks are done in front of you: a block laid flat under the centre of the door, which the door must touch and reverse from, and a hand passed through the photo-eye beam while the door closes.
A door that lifts as it was designed to
The difference is felt the first time you pull the release cord and lift the door yourself. It rises with one hand, pauses where you leave it, and comes down at the speed you lower it rather than dropping the last stretch. Under power, the opener runs without the strain in its note that had crept in as the old springs tired, and the door reaches the floor evenly along the seal. Both springs now stretch to the same length as the door closes, both pulleys turn without a squeal, and the cables lie in their grooves. A door in this condition puts little wear on the opener, which is good news for the motor.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1One spring per side or two
Heavier doors sometimes carry a pair of springs on each side rather than one. Four springs, four containment cables and the extra setting time show as their own lines.
2Opener adjustment and testing
Resetting the opener's force and travel to the newly balanced door and running the reversal tests is a short task that the quote names when it applies.
3Door weight and size
Spring rating follows the door's weight, and a wide insulated door or a wood door takes heavier springs than a light single. Weight and height together set the parts on the quote.
Extension Spring Replacement: questions
What if the spring hanger has pulled loose from the ceiling?
It is put right as part of the job. The rear hanger takes the full pull of the spring on every cycle, and lag screws driven into thin plywood, a split joist or drywall work loose over the years, which is often why a door slowly goes out of balance. The technician re-fixes the hanger with fresh lag screws into solid framing, or adds a length of angle iron to reach it, before the new springs are hung.
Can I keep using the opener until the spring is replaced?
It is better to leave the door where it is. With one spring gone, the opener is lifting most of the door's weight on its own, which strains the motor, can bend the top section and often throws a cable off its pulley, adding to the work. Use another door in and out, keep the bay clear, and let the technician move the door once it is secured.
What is a safety cable, and does my door need one?
A safety or containment cable is threaded down the inside of each extension spring and fixed at the hanger behind and the bracket in front. It carries no load in normal use. If a spring snaps, the cable keeps the broken halves in place beside the track. Every extension-spring door should have one each side, and the industry's inspection checklist asks for it. Doors installed decades ago often have none; they are added with the new springs.
